Ancient Trees of Iran, a documentary narrated by acclaimed Iranian actor Shahab Hosseini, has begun its online release on Hashure. The film is produced and directed by Hamid Koreyli.

About the Documentary

Ancient Trees of Iran introduces a selection of the country’s oldest trees, presenting previously unseen images alongside scientifically sound, thoroughly researched information. The film covers species including plane, walnut, juniper, cypress and bane (wild pistachio), each shown in its natural habitat.

Among the project’s main objectives are raising public awareness, encouraging a more responsible attitude toward these living monuments, and inspiring stronger commitment to their preservation. The project also aims to encourage material and intellectual investment in the conservation, restoration and propagation of ancient trees.

Production and Research

  • The production team traveled to the natural habitat of each tree to document it on location.
  • Filming was carried out in 4K over five months, across all four seasons and nineteen provinces of Iran.
  • Pre-production began in early autumn 2019 and covered the final screenplay revision, selection of the technical crew, procurement of specialized equipment and securing of financial resources.
  • For each tree, the film provides geographical coordinates, habitat and growing conditions, biological characteristics, natural and national significance, and the threats it faces.
  • An original music album was composed and recorded specially for the film.

Scientific Advisors

All information, texts, figures and scientific references in the film were reviewed, edited and verified under the supervision of the project’s scientific advisors. Professor Khoshnevis, Dr. Shirvani, Dr. Matini-Zadeh and Dr. Sadeghzadeh Hallaj, members of the Faculty of Natural Resources at the University of Tehran and senior experts at Iran’s Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands, served as advisors, together with experts from provincial Cultural Heritage departments who contributed as scientific and technical consultants during the research phase.
