“Residents of Nowhere” is an adaptation of Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s French play “Between Worlds”. The film tells the story of a young man who suddenly finds himself in a peculiar guest house. This mysterious guest house’s exact location is unclear, but the more one reflects on it, the more it becomes evident that the young man is situated somewhere between life and death. In this film, Shahab Hosseini blends the experience of coma with a fantastical narrative, incorporating philosophical and mystical perspectives to explore existence, life, death, and the secrets of life. Several main characters engage in continuous dialogue to decipher their pasts and inner mental worlds, creating an opportunity for both the characters and the audience to reconsider themselves. According to critics, Hosseini’s efforts to align with the psychological desires of the play, his staging, and believable performances in the film are commendable. Hosseini comments on the film: “Some cinematic works have a sense of rain-soaked earth and evoke a sense of familiarity. I experience this feeling with Schmitt’s works and feel that they have a reminder quality. The first time I encountered the play ‘Between Worlds’, it impacted my reflection on this subject. The main themes of the play address important issues like the human condition and belief in God. Schmitt’s works never force a change in thought; instead, he uses these situations to convey more significant matters. According to Schmitt, life is such a blessing that it should be used to accomplish something important and lasting.” He adds: “The film ‘Residents of Nowhere’ differs from Schmitt’s play in two ways. In ‘Residents of Nowhere’, Shahab Hosseini depicts five stages of confronting death, which are not present in the original play. “Residents of Nowhere” was released in theaters last year and later became available on video streaming platforms. Featuring performances by Parnaz Izadiyar, Arman Darvish, Naheed Moslemi, Ahmad Saatchian, Ghazal Nazar, Mehdi Hosseini, Teni Avakian, and Shahab Hosseini himself, it is his second directorial effort after “Resident of the Middle Floor”. Interestingly, the film was shot over a month from 11 PM to 11 AM.
