Intoxicated by Love”, directed by Iranian filmmaker Hassan Fat’hi and written by Iranian writer Farhad Tohidi, is an Iranian-Turkish feature film about the story of 13th-century Persian poet Rumi and his close friendship with his spiritual instructor, Persian dervish Shams Tabrizi. Starring both Iranian and Turkish actors, the film was shot mostly in Konya, Turkey, where Rumi wrote most of his poems in real life.
Iranian actors Parsa Pirouzfar and Shahab Hosseini play the roles of Rumi and Shams, respectively. The shooting of this project began in late 2019 and was later faced with difficulties when the pandemic took over the world and international borders were closed. But now, after four years, the film was finally released simultaneously in Iran and Turkey, breaking box office records in Iran.
“Shams runs the show in this film. He is both the strength and weakness of the movie; because, if Shahab Hosseini weren’t there to develop Shams’s rebellious character and his sense of dishevelment and reproaching manner, nobody would have noticed the flaws in the film.”
